Death of Lucretia
Death of Lucretia
Acrylic on Paper
Lucretia is a legendary figure in the history of the Roman Republic. According to legend she was raped by Sextus, son of Tarquinius Superbus, and having revealed this to her husband, in a letter, took her own life. This incident led to the insurrection headed by Junius Brutus and the expulsion of the Tarquins from Rome. The result was the replacement of the monarchy with the new republic.
